During the 2011-2012 concert
season, Apollo will explore the singular folk elements imbued in Russian and French music. While featuring a few compositional
war-horses from each of these countries - Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Debussy, to name a few - Apollo will premiere string arrangements
of both popular and rarely heard folk melodies from these unique and storied cultures.

Love' Saturday, March 24th, 2012 8pm Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center
for the Performing Arts

|
Join Apollo for a program featuring the Russian heavyweights of the 19th and 20th centuries. Shostakovich's
stirring and folk-infused Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor, a lamentation for both Shostakovich's closest friend and the victims
of the Holocaust, will be spotlighted. Also highlighting the program will be Prokofiev's mellifluous Five Melodies for
Violin and Piano, Schnittke's intriguing 'Prelude in Memorium of Shostakovich', and a set of Russian folk melodies - including
folk tunes by the nationalistic-minded 'The Mighty Handful'- arranged for strings by Apollo. Tchaikovsky's famed 'Souvenir
de Florence' string sextet will provide a rousing finale to an evening of Russian reverence.

'Folk Colorings of the Impressionist Masters' Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 4pm Duncan Recital Hall, Shepherd School of Music at Rice
University (Alice Pratt Brown Hall)
|

|
Three avant-garde French composers immersed
in the Impressionist movement infused their seminal chamber music works with distinctive folk flavorings. Experience
with Apollo Ravel's exquisite and Hungarian-inspired 'Duo for Violin and Cello', as well as his Piano Trio in A minor, a work
reflecting the folk influences of his native French Basque ancestry. Debussy's String Quartet in G Minor, evocative
of both Spanish sounds and Javanese Gamelan colors, as well as Satie's 'Choses vues a droite et a gauche; sans lunettes' (Things
Seen Left to Right; Without Glasses), will be featured. In Apollonian fashion, a set of traditional French folk melodies
arranged for strings will connect and contextualize these Impressionist masters and their folk inspirations.
